Fire Safety Plan
CALL 9-1-1 IN CASE OF FIRE OR OTHER EMERGENCY
Danger from fire is always present, and not knowing what to do in the event of an emergency is a contributing factor resulting in fire tragedies. It is essential that all occupants in a building be completely familiar with emergency evacuation procedures as outlined.
FIRE OR OTHER EMERGENCIES:
- When there is a fire or other emergency that poses immediate danger to persons or property, immediately warn persons in the area.
- Sound the nearest blow horn which will alert building occupants to evacuate.
- Use the closest exit to leave the building immediately.
- If you must open a door on the way to an exit, feel the door for heat before opening. If you are unable to use a door, use an alternate exit if the door is hot or smoke is present.Â
- If able, assist others to leave the building. Visitors to the building may require direction to evacuate.
- Proceed to the muster area at the designated area.
- Call 911 from outside of the building.
- Never attempt to re-enter the building once you have evacuated. Always wait to receive an all clear from Emergency Services personnel before re-entering.
- Designate one person to relay information to Emergency Services when they arrive.
PRE-PLANNING IN CASE OF FIRE AND/OR FIRE ALARM:
- Learn where the building blow horns are located, and how to operate. When you are the first person to realize or sense that a fire is in progress, use the blow horn to notify the occupants of the building. Â
- Call 911 from outside the building.
- Learn where the building fire extinguishers are located and how to safely operate. (see below). Â
Only use a fire extinguisher if safe to do so and you know how to use it
- Learn the location of fire exits and stairways.
PROCEDURES FOR THOSE WITH DISABILITIESÂ
- In the event of an emergency, disabled persons should proceed to the nearest exit or stairwell if safe to do so.
- If you are unable to proceed down the stairwell, remain in the stairwell until someone can assist you or Emergency Services arrives to assist you.
- Once information has been relayed to Emergency Services, assistance can be sent to evacuate persons in the stairwells.
FIGHTING A FIRE:
- Prior to fighting a fire, notify persons in the immediate area. Make sure you have an exit at your back.
- Activate the Emergency evacuation using the blow horn.
- Be calm and use good judgment at all times.
- Never attempt to fight a fire unless the fire is small and you feel confident that you can extinguish or isolate the fire by using a portable fire extinguisher.
- When you have exhausted the extinguisher, back away if unable to totally extinguish the fire. Ensure you have an exit at your back. Do not get trapped.
Attempting to extinguish a fire is a voluntary act.
